1. Course Description:
This course equips Dental Therapists with critical skills to manage dental trauma emergencies, including fractures, avulsions, and soft tissue injuries, in low-resource environments. Participants will learn immediate care protocols, infection control, suturing techniques, and pain management strategies, with emphasis on practical, field-ready solutions for African healthcare contexts. Real-world case studies reinforce trauma triage and patient communication skills.
2. Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will:
- Classify dental trauma types (crown/root fractures, avulsions) and assess severity.
- Perform immediate care for avulsed teeth (replantation, storage media options).
- Apply temporary stabilization (splinting) and pain relief methods (pharmacological/non-pharmacological).
- Master basic suturing for oral soft tissue injuries (materials, techniques, aftercare).
- Implement infection control in trauma cases (antiseptics, antibiotic protocols).
- Navigate African challenges (limited supplies, community triage) with adaptive strategies.
